Energy On The Offensive™ #028 - Driver Admits On Facebook He Is Working With Little To No Sleep

Driver fatigue is the cause of many accidents and lawsuits.

The driver highlighted in this post works for a tank truck carrier running about 250 units. You can’t control what a driver does in their off hours or whether they get any sleep before work.

However, I do recommend:

  • Train dispatchers to recognize and speak up if a driver is showing signs of fatigue or lack of sleep.

  • Monitor telematic data for signs of fatigue and immediately address it.

  • Send out and document emails or other notices to drivers that they are not to drive or stop driving if they are sick, fatigued, or in an unsafe condition.

If a driver does make a stupid mistake, drive on very little sleep, and kills a family of four, you want to be able to argue that your company has done everything in your control to prevent this. You want to be able to prove that your company has a culture promoting the opposite of this.
